Cases

A wide variety of 18th-Century cases employed leather in their construction,

ranging from trunks to portmanteaus to spyglass cases to,...well, just about

anything.  And I can make "just about anything" you have in mind, including

that very unique gift for the person who already has "just about

EVERYthing."

18th-Century Oval Valise.

Sometimes called a Portmanteau, this handsome piece was the "carry-on"

luggage of the 1700s.  Medium size is 16" long, 6" tall, and 9" deep.  A

gentleman can use this size to carry two clean shirts, a clean pair of

breeches, clean stockings, and some toiletries for "freshening up" at each

tavern stop along the way.

This sturdy, attractive piece employs hand-finished and embossed 10-12 oz.

English bridle leather, hand-stitched with heavy flax cord.  It features two

brass rings (for a carrying strap or for attaching to the cantle of your

saddle) and decoratively carved "eaves" on the ends to help keep the

elements out.  Brass harness buckles with hand-forged iron tongues round out

the period, genteel look.  This particular piece sells for $355, unlined.

I am currently working on a larger piece with a domed construction, which I

will soon display for you here.  The larger piece sells for $395, unlined.

Call me before you send for your coach-and-four to take you to Philadelphia,

so we may discuss the wide variety of shapes, sizes, linings, colours, and

personalisations available to you.
